A new kind of dreaming (finished)

I have just recently finished "A New Kind Of Dreaming", and it seems it was not too bad after all. After Jamie goes to Port Barren he finds a mysterious boat and befriends a boy of his age called Cameron. I am not going to talk about the storyline too much, because you will have to read it. The story involves a overweight cop who will do anything to hide his past and protect his career, a trip through the desert and some bones of a refugee from the boat. Still don't know where it's leading to? Then read it!

In my last post, I mentioned that it was very boring at the start, so those of you who find it dragging on, you will soon get absorbed by the storyline later on like I did. If you are looking for something humourous and witty, you won't find it here. What you will find though is an original story and a mystery to solve while reading it.

A new kind of dreaming

HEY! i started reading a new kind of dreaming and i agree 101% with tuahaa! its such a drag! the dialogs go on forever! and no good parts have happened yet. The start is very boring in my opinion and i only reached chapter four because its very boring and i doubt i will have any interest in it by the nd because i dont like fantasy books.

A New Kind of Dreaming by Anthony Eaton

This book is a about a boy called Jamie Riley who is sent to Port Barren because he was found in a stolen car. However Jamie doesn't think much of Port Barren, he never suspected that he would have the biggest adventure of his life over there.
After reading the prologue and the blob at the back of the book, (I won't write the whole thing again because Fatima and Tauhaa have already done it) I wanted to read on very strongly because I thought that somebody would find out about the murder that Elliot committed on that ship. I thought that those pair of eyes would be witnesses to that crime.
My predictions proved right because those pair of eyes were the eyes of a foreign girl who made it to the island(I won't say how) and disappeared mysteriously just before the translator came from the city.
I really liked this book because it was action packed and full of suspense which excited me a lot while reading it. It also taught me new stuff. I strongly recommend this book for advanced readers and those who are not afraid of guns and murder(since there was a part that included these stuff)

A new kind of dreaming

We have recently started reading this book and it starts the story by a group of young sailors finding a pile of dead bodies on a shipwreck. Two of the sailors decide to see what the situation is, curious and afraid at the same time. The older and slightly sinister one of the sailors kills a man on board who is holding a machete (thinking that he would fight back if he knew they were there) and tells his partner to keep it a secret. But they do not realise that there is someone watching them.

After the prologue, it jumps to another scene where two brothers say goodbye after one is sent to prison (for something I do not know yet). They have a short conversation and this is where I close the book, simply because it seems to drag on forever, even though I have only read about a chapter. There is no interesting dialogue that grabs my attention, but I am yet to find out if this book is truly worthy to be read when I go deeper into the seemingly boring storyline. This book does not appeal to me at all, although I think that when the brother that goes to jail is when the interesting bit will start. I want to know how he lives and what the plot of the story is, which I am sure I will find out the next time I open the book, if I ever bother.

Tales From The Perilous Realm is a collection of four short stories by Tolkien. I picked this book up because it was the only other book by J.R.R Tolkien available from the school library.

My favourite short story from this book is called "Farmer Giles of Ham", which is about a simple farmer who became a village hero after shooting a deaf, stupid giant which trampled his favourite cow. Somewhere in the middle of the story he eventually finds himself on a quest to slay a particularly evil Dragon called Chrysophylax who is terrorizing the kingdom and gain all his riches. The king finds out about this and wants a share of the treasure, and sends some knights to accompany him. In the end, all the knights run away at the sight of the Dragon but Giles stays put. He has a sword that Chrysophylax is afraid of, because it is magical and was made specially for killing dragons. Giles manages to injure Chrysophylax's wing, making him unable to fly. In the end Chrysophylax bargains with Giles; saying that he will give him a large amount of his treasure, carry it to his home and stay with him to protect it. Giles agrees, because he knows if he does not accept, the king will take all the treasure away from him and he will be left with nothing.

Giles enjoys his treasure with his wife and children, and gives a fair amount to his friends and those who helped him organize the treasure and guard Chrysophylax. When Giles is of old age, he finally releases his dragon, who flies home to find a younger dragon taking possession of his hoard, and kills him immediately to repossess his riches.

Another one of the short stories, called "Adventures of Tom Bombadil" is a series of short rhymes. One of the rhymes that appealed to me was called "Perry the Winkle", which is about a lonely troll who has trouble making friends because everyone is afraid of him. He goes to town and finds everyone running away. As he sits down, a little boy who is called Perry the Winkle approaches him and befriends him. Every Thursday, the boy would go to the Troll's house to have dinner, because he does not have much to eat. Here is a small quote from the rhyme:

"Now Perry-the-Winkle grew so fat

through eating of cramsome bread,

his weskit bust, and never a hat

would sit upon his head;

for Every Thursday he went to tea,

and sat on the kitchen floor,

and smaller the old Troll seemed to be,

as he grew more and more."

In the end of the rhyme, Perry-the-Winkle becomes an enormously fat and famous baker who learned the arts of the Troll's cooking, but still comes to visit him every Thursday to dine together. There are two more short stories in the book, but they are not as enjoyable, and a bit weird too (but somewhat entertaining and very original).

I did not enjoy this book as much as The Hobbit, because they are short stories, and like all short stories, they don't have a lot of depth. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in these type of books that are a bit humorous and contain some of old English.

A New Kind Of Dreaming, Fatima

We have started reading a new kind of dreaming and finished the prelude. The book's prelude seems interesting and suspenseful because it writes about 2 men which go and see an abandoned ship when all of a sudden they think someone is trying to kill them so one of the men kill the guy that was apparently trying to kill them then after they get off the book it says that the men don't realize that there are eyes watching them in the ship. I think in the book what will happen is that the eyes that was watching turns out to be some deadly monster and in the end they kill the monster.

Black Taxi, Fatima

This week i read a book called Black Taxi by James Moloney. The book is about a girl named Rosie which is given her grandfather's keys to his black Mercedes when she gets a mysterious phone call about a missing ring and that's when her adventures begin.
I really liked this book because it was funny, exciting and kept you on edge through the entire book. Its a really good book that i recommend to 13-15yr olds.
